Biased TV feature

Early this Sunday, 25 July evening, TV Channel 5 featured in their program “USI” a segment titled: “Daliri sa Gatilyo” or something like that, meaning trigger finger. Host was Paolo Bediones.

The Story of Dra. Jasmin J. Navarro: Shot and Killed During Election Gun Ban

Recently, I received a very compelling email. It was from a fellow I never met. His story hit me in the gut, caused me to shed a tear, and made me feel rotten about the entire justice system of which I myself am a part of. It also highlights the great challenge that our countrymen have in their elusive quest for justice. We in PROGUN missed reporting the story of Dra. Navarro in our Comelec crime statistics project last June. So I deemed it fit to report this particular incident, as told by her son in his own words:  Continue Reading

The Magic 160

In 1999, then Chief PNP Panfilo Lacson refused to issue PTCFORs to licensed  gun owners and the general public. Instead, in his entire term he issued only about 160 PTCFORs mostly to cronies of ERAP such as Fernando Poe Jr, Atong Ang, Dante Tan, and Mark Jimenez. These lucky persons were known as the "magic 160".Today 11 years later we still have the issue or selective issuances of firearms permits to civilians. There is no longer any "Magic 160" Today it is more like the "Magic 10". The issue today is no longer cronyism. Rather, the issue today is insensitivity and ignorance. Continue Reading

No PTCFORs being issued: An Extended and Continuing Illegal Gun Ban

As of this writing, the Comelec gun ban has ended more than a month ago. To date, no permits-to-carry Firearms Outside of residence (PTCFORs) have been issued by the Chief PNP, Gen. Jesus Verzosa. Likewise, everyone should be made aware that the PNP is now charging  P700 for permits-to-transport (PTT), up from the usual P500 (P360 is the official fee). If you pay only the official fee of P360, you get a ONE DAY PTT valid only for ONE TRIP from your house to gun club and back. That's it. Continue Reading

Dragon Rising: The proliferation of China guns

A survey of the local market would show a steadily increasing rise in the prices of imported firearms. Traditional guns such as Colt, Smith and Wesson, Berretta, and Ruger have prices that have now gone through the roof in terms of affordability. European guns such as H & K, Glock, Browning, and FEG are now history, considering the European Union arms embargo against the Philippines. For the average gun enthusiast, spending the equivalent of over $1,500-2,000 dollars for a gun is no longer a viable option.Enter China. Continue Reading

Gun Show 2010 Perspectives and Review

As an act of solidarity with the shooting community, we attended the gun show at Megamall yesterday. Some observations:1. The dealers and employees who are our long time friends over the years went out of their way to greet us and make us feel welcome. We enjoyed our long chats about their latest products and complimentary food by Willi Hahn of Hahn Manila and Gina Angangco and Bob Sajot of Armscor. As a result, since we had some extra cash, we were seduced into buying some new goodies. (JJFAT got a Norinco M4 and I will be getting the Colt M4 .22 hehe).2. Prices have gone substantially upwards. The traditional brands of guns such as Glock, S&W, Mossberg, have all gone from the usual 25-35K to about 50-65K. The prices of the finer pistols and hunting rifles such as Sig Sauer, Para Ord, Colt, Anshutz have gone though the roof at 80-100K+. Continue Reading

Our Lax Security Measures

Yesterday noon I attended Mass at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Makati City. It is also the parish of Vice President Jejomar Binay and his family. Due to the feast of the Pentecost, Binay was there with his son the Mayor Jun Jun Binay, Congresswomen Abigail Binay and Monique Lagdameo, the Vice Mayor and all the councilors and officials of Makati City.I always carry my pistol wherever I go. So I simply walked in with my small bag with my loaded Ruger LCP and 4 spare magazines, and sat down a few feet away from the Vice President and his dignitaries. In spite of the presence of military and police escorts and an army of plain clothes fierce looking body guards, there I was sitting for an hour and a half with a loaded gun (in an obvious black gun bag) a few feet away from the Vice President. No one bothered to check me. Continue Reading
