Ban guns in public places, P-Noy urged

WE IN the Gunless Society and Ang Kapatiran Party hope that President Aquino gets to read this.

First of all, we congratulate the President on his overwhelming election victory and pray for his success.

To ensure peace and order, we urge him to replicate the Commission on Elections’ gun ban in public places. The ban was implemented successfully by the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines during the election campaign period from Jan. 10 to June 9, 2010. The essence of the Comelec gun ban is to avoid turning the harmless act of carrying a gun or deadly weapon in public places into a violent act.

Let us be clear: we are not proposing a ban on owning guns, as we are not against keeping licensed guns at home for protection or sports.

The objective of the Comelec gun ban in public places was essentially the same as that of the Anti-Deadly Weapons Act of 1991, which was certified by his mother, then-President Corazon Aquino, to Congress as urgent, for immediate enactment, following the murders of Eldon Maguan on July 2, 1991 and of Maureen Hultman and Roland Chapman a few days later. It was meant to reduce the danger of guns being used for violent crimes. The Senate passed the bill swiftly, but the House’s committee on public order and security opposed it.

When President Cory declared the 1990s as the Decade of Peace on Jan. 1, 1990 at the Malacañang Heroes Hall, she said:

“To those of you present here and those not present, all men of good will, I thank you for your solidarity with me in this common cause of peace. Many of you have started peace initiatives, such as the campaign for a gunless society; may your tribe increase…”

To continue the unfinished task of his mother, we urge President Aquino to issue an executive order canceling permits that allow the carrying of firearms outside the home and to suspend further issuance of such permits except for law enforcers who are authorized, in uniform and on duty.

An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.

  1. Hahaha… this is totally non-sense.

Have you ever experience life and death situation? And been helpless? And if so, you will understand.

Not only Gun can kill, even pencil can kill.

  2. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure…  I say, An ounce of a BULLET, is worth more than a pound of BLOOD!

I would rather be able to protect myself and my family with my gun than trust anybody else.  This guy must be having illusions that he lives in a perfect world without criminals.  Do not blame us, the LEGAL, RESPONSIBLE, GOD FEARING, owner of guns because we are on the government’s side.  We have paid our taxes, fees and what have you to legally acquire our guns.

        1. Pwede seguro ban the criminals in all public places and all other places.
