Zamboanga casualty count nears 300

The casualty count in the Zamboanga crisis has reached almost 300, with 104 dead and 193 wounded, the military said on Wednesday.

Data released by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office (PAO) showed that of the 104 fatalities, 11 were soldiers, three policemen, seven civilians, and 83 Moro National
Liberation Front (MNLF) gunmen.

Among 193 wounded, 105 were soldiers, 12 policemen, 67 civilians, and nine MNLF gunmen.

The AFP said 93 rogue MNLF elements have also been arrested or surrendered as of Wednesday.

In addition, the 152 MNLF hostages have been rescued, while 14 managed to escape.

Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in region 9 said at least 16,931 families or 93,750 people have been affected in the 10-day-old fighting between MNLF fighters and government security forces.

Of the total number of affected population, 15,195 families of 86,097 people are now temporarily housed in government shelters.

At least 1,736 families or 7,653 people have opted to stay with relatives.
