ZAMBOANGA CITY — A top barangay official was shot and wounded after attending a political campaign rally in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, a police official disclosed Thursday.
Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) spokesman Chief Insp. Ariel Huesca identified the victim as Marlon Manisig, 51, the barangay chairman of Canuto Enerio, Gutalac, Zamboanga del Norte.
Huesca said Manisig was shot and wounded around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday along the highway in Barangay Loay, Gutalac municipality.
Manisig was driving his motorcycle and on a convoy when shot by two unidentified gunmen aboard two motorcycles traveling on opposite direction, Huesca said.
Manisig came from the political campaign rally of the Alliance for Peace and Progress (APP) headed by incumbent Gutalac town Mayor Mariano Candelaria, Jr. in Barangay Loay and was en route to the town proper when the suspects shot him, Huesca said.
The police of Gutalac town are conducting thorough probe of the incident to determine whether it is politically motivated, he said. (PNA)
