MANILA, Philippines—A relative of Commission on Elections Commissioner Elias Yusoph lost P2 million worth of cell phones, almost P1 million in cash and his sports utility vehicle (SUV) to thieves on Saturday evening.

SPO1 Wilfredo Hapin of the Quezon City Police District Station 7 said Rashdy Ali, Yusoph’s nephew, and his wife Fatima Tumawis were driving home with three other people when five armed men in a Toyota Innova van blocked their path on P. Tuazon Avenue in Cubao, Quezon City, at around 9:30 p.m.

“The victims said they were just a few meters away from their house when the armed men suddenly appeared,” Hapin told the Inquirer.

In their statement to the police, the victims said the armed men forced them to alight from Ali’s Toyota Fortuner (NIR 719).

One of the robbers then forcibly took the keys to the vehicle from Ali who was the driver.

The victims also told the police that one of the armed men fired at Ali. However, the gun misfired and the robber hit Ali on the head with butt of the firearm before dropping it on the ground.

The police said the gun would be subjected to tests.

The victims said that after the thieves took off in Ali’s Fortuner, they gave chase but failed to catch up with them.

Inside Ali’s SUV were P2 million worth of cell phones and P950, 000 in cash. The couple said the money came from the earnings of their cell phone store in San Juan City.

In June, Yusoph landed in the news after his son was kidnapped by armed men in Marawi City. Nuralden Yusoph was released the following month.
