MANILA, Philippines — A wounded suspected member of leftist New People’s Army (NPA) was captured in an encounter with Philippine government troops in northern Philippine province of Quezon Sunday morning, military said.

A squad from the 1st Infantry Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army clashed with an undetermined number of rebels at Ilavac village in Real town at around 6:45 a.m. local time, the Public Information Office (PIO) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said.

The firefight lasted for about 15 minutes and a rebel, who was wounded in the incident, was arrested. Also seized were one M16 Rifle, 14 M203 grenades, five backpacks and one magazine for M16 with 14 rounds of ammunition, the PIO said.

Government troops launched pursuit operations against the rebels, it said, adding that the AFP was yet to verify the identity of the arrested rebel as he was still being treated.

The NPA, an armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front, has been waging a war against the government for over four decades.
