CEBU – An elderly woman and her granddaughter were killed by suspected burglars in Bantayan Island, Cebu before dawn on Monday.

Patricia Batoy,74, and her 9-year-old grand daughter, Angelica, were sleeping when two burglars broke into their house in Barangay Kabangbang at around 2 a.m.

The victims were awoken when the suspects entered their room. The suspects then stabbed them repeatedly using a knife.

The house was also in disarray when discovered by authorities and relatives of the victims.

An autopsy result showed that Patricia sustained 15 stab wounds, including one in the breast area, while Angelica sustained 10 stab wounds.

The suspects, identified as Romel Dela Peña Ruben Tabion, were arrested after some neighbors recognized them and told the police.

They were arrested at the Bantayan Port while trying to escape to Negros Occidental.

Several items, including Patricia’s photo, were found from the suspects. Police said the items will be used as evidence.

Dela Peña claimed they were not aware that they were already committing the crime since they were drunk.

Carmen Bausin, Patricia’s sister, said this is not the first time Batoy was robbed by the same suspects.

“They were caught robbing some valuables before but my sister forgave them with a condition that it will not happen again,” Bausin said.

The police are looking into the possibility that the suspects were part of a robbery group in the area.

The suspects are facing robbery and homicide charges.
