MANILA, Philippines – A winning barangay elections bet’s 3-year term was cut short after he was shot dead by his brother-in-law in Caloocan City, Thursday night.
Police identified the victim as Morie Tujan, who had just won as councilman of Barangay 67 in Caloocan City in the recently concluded barangay elections.
Tujan’s killer was his brother-in-law identified as Edgardo Lazaro.
Investigators said that Lazaro ran out of his house armed with a gun and fired shots while standing in the middle of the street.
Horrified neighbors reported the incident to the police, but Tujan attempted to pacify his brother-in-law.
A witness said that while Tujan was trying to grab the gun from Lazaro, the suspect pulled the trigger. The barangay official was hit in the neck and the bullet went through his face.
Residents rushed Tujan to the nearest hospital, but he was declared dead-on-arrival.
Police said that after shooting down Tujan, the suspect ran to his house. He was after almost an hour of negotiations. — Report from Jeck Batallones, ABS-CBN News
