COTABATO CITY (UPDATE) – An elderly Filipino Chinese businesswoman was abducted late Friday afternoon in Cotabato City by unidentified armed men who also killed her escorts.
The victim, Conchita Tan, 73, is a resident of Purok Salvacion in Barangay Rosary Heights II. She is also the owner of LCT Hardware in Magallanes Street.
The victim and her husband Lucio Tan were on their way home from their store, escorted by a driver with a security escort riding behind in another car.
Unidentified armed men fired at the second vehicle, and the Tan couple’s security escorts fired back.
The armed assailants, however, were able to approach the couple’s vehicle. Tan’s husband tried to lock the vehicle’s door, but one of the armed men smashed the vehicle’s windows with a hammer. They forcibly opened the front passenger side door where Conchita was sitting and then took her.
Tan said he did not recognize the abductors. He said one of the armed men pointed a gun at him.
The armed men shot dead the security escort Alvin Doruelo, a former member of the Philippine Marines. The driver, Richard Embarga, was wounded and was later taken to hospital. He died in the hospital.
A get-away vehicle of the armed abductors, a maroon car without a plate number, was found by authorities in Abbey Road in Poblacion 3. Another get-away vehicle, a Tamaraw FX, was found outside a mosque.
An explosive and ordnance team was called after a rocket -propelled grenade round was found in one of the vehicles.
Authorities are still looking for clues on where the victim was brought. They believe she was transported to another area through a pumpboat.
ABS-CBN News tried to interview residents in the area, but they refused, saying they did not see anything unusual.
