ZAMBOANGA CITY — Gunmen killed a village chairman and a supporter in an ambush in Basilan province on Wednesday, barely five days before the barangay and youth elections.

Shot dead were Jainuddin Dulla, the village chairman of Balas in Lamitan town, and Jamrud Kuranding, Dulla’s driver.

Basilan Police Director Cristeto Rey Gonzalodo said the incident took place around 8:30 a.m. in Barangay Sengal, Lamitan.

Kuranding died on the spot. Dulla, on the other hand, expired while undergoing treatment in one of the hospitals in this city.

Initial investigation revealed that the victims were aboard a motorcycle, with Kuranding driving, when gunmen ambushed them.

The victims were on the way to attend a candidates’ forum.

Gonzalodo said the gunmen, who fled to the hinterlands, remain unidentified.

Gonzalodo has ordered the police in Lamitan town to look into all possible motives, including political rivalry, to unmask the suspects.

He also ordered the police in the entire province of Basilan to tighten their watch and to strictly implement the election gun ban to prevent any similar incident.

Basilan Governor Jum Akbar condemned the ambush-slay of Dulla and Kuranding and urged the police to unmask the killers.

“Justice should be given to the victims’ families,” Akbar said.

Wednesday’s incident was the second in Basilan since the election gun ban took effect last September 25.

The gun ban will remain in effect until November 10 to ensure a peace and orderly elections for the village and Sangguniang Kabataan officials on Monday, October 25.

Last October 2, an unidentified gunman shot and killed Entong Musa, an election officer, in the village of San Rafael, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan.
