BATANGAS CITY, Philippines—A barangay (village) captain was shot dead while a tricycle driver was wounded when unidentified gunmen shot them while they were travelling in the village of P. Niogan, Mabini, Batangas, Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.
Chief Inspector Elpidio Dueñas, Mabini town police chief, identified the fatality as Joseph Sandoval, 44, and the wounded as Ali Arana, 54.
Investigation showed that at around 5:10 p.m., Sandoval was on his way home on board a tricycle driven by Arana when the gunmen who were riding a motorcycle shot them.
Sandoval suffered a lone bullet wound on his left eye while Arana was hit on the left portion of the head.
The two were rushed to the Mabini General Hospital but Sandoval was pronounced dead on arrival.
Dueñas said police were still determining who had Sandoval killed and why.
