Poll toll: 12
POLICE recorded a total of 44 election-related violent incidents that killed 12 people and wounded 19 others in Monday’s elections, Philippine National Police chief Director General Jesus A. Verzosa said.
Verzosa said that of the 44 incidents, six were shootings, seven were explosions, eight were harassment of government units and the rest were ambuscades, destruction of Precinct Count Optical Scan machines and ballot-snatching. Most of the cases took place in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
However, Verzosa said Monday’s election was generally peaceful compared to the 2004 elections.
“The election was generally peaceful although marred by isolated cases of violence which are attributed mostly to intense partisan rivalries at the local level,” Verzosa said. Partisan Armed Groups and the proliferation of loose firearms were the major factors that contributed to violent incidents.
