TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte, Philippines—Unidentified gunmen shot dead an anti-logging tribal leader in Monkayo, Compostela Valley on Monday evening, the police said on Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent Aaron Aquino, Compostela Valley police chief, said people affected by the anti-logging stance of Carlito Chavez could have killed him.
The 54-year-old Chavez, also known as Datu Namagyo, was a chieftain of the Dibabawon tribe in Monkayo.
He was having snacks at a bakeshop on Magsaysay Street in Monkayo when attacked by two motorcycle-riding men around 6:45 p.m. Monday.
Aquino said the two gunmen pumped several bullets into Chavez’s body and killed him instantly.
“One unidentified customer was also hit by stray bullets on his left foot,” he said by phone.
Aquino said they were eyeing illegal loggers behind Chavez’s murder.
“He was actively involved in the campaign against illegal logging in the forested area covered by (his tribe’s) Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT),” he said.
Chavez was the second tribal chieftain murdered in Monkayo during the past months.
In July 2009, gunmen also ambushed and killed Mandaya datu Florelio Andresan.
In January, Rajah Carlito Buntas, also a staunch anti-logging and anti-mining Dibabawon clan leader, and his son Charlie, were hurt during an ambush by unidentified suspects while on their way to attend a tribal council meeting in Monkayo town proper.
