(Updated 8:12 p.m.) A businesswoman who was abducted in Quezon City last weekend was rescued in Davao City Thursday, with three of her abductors killed in an encounter with police.
 
Police in Davao are now tracking down at least 11 other suspects who managed to elude arrest during the encounter, radio dzBB reported.
 
The report quoted Davao Region police head Chief Superintendent Jaime Morente as saying that the victim was abducted in Quezon City last July 5.

According to a report on GMA News TV’s “Balita Pilipinas,” the victim was abducted by 14 suspects believed to be members of Bye Bye kidnap for ransom group.

Superintendent Ronald dela Rosa, Davao City Police Office chief, identified the victim as Sally Chua.

Dela Rosa said Chua convinced her abductors to have the pay-out of ransom money in Davao City because she trusted the police there.

Her abductors, who initially demanded a ransom of P150 million but agreed to lower it to P15 million later, brought her to Davao City by land.

Police said the suspects may have driven by car to Sorsogon, then took the RORO (roll on-roll off) ship to Samar, driven to Southern Leyte,  took the RORO again to Surigao, and land travelled to Davao City.

Anti-crime group Movement for Restoration of Peace and Order said the ports should have detected the abductors.

“Nakapagtataka na naibyahe nila from Luzon to Mindanao. For sure dumaan sa mga ports ‘yan. Bakit hindi na-detect ng mga metal detectors ‘yung bitbit ng mga kidnappers?” the group’s president, Ka Kuen Chua, said in a report on GMA News’ “24 Oras.”
