Town councilor candidate shot dead in Zamboanga del Sur

COTABATO, Philippines (Xinhua) – Motalliden Tapodoc, a candidate for councilor in the town of Labangan in Philippines’ southern Zamboanga del Sur province, was shot by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Pagadian city Sunday, said provincial police chief Superintendent Angelo Sunglao on Monday.

Tapodoc suffered seven bullet wounds and died.

Political violence is wide-spread in the Philippines, especially in time of a national election. In November, 57 people, including 30 journalists, were killed in a political motivated massacre. The victims were on their way to witness a local town mayor registered as governor candidate in this May’s election.
