Philippine police rescued a Filipina-American kidnap victim in a dawn raid on Thursday that resulted in the death of three of the abductors, a police statement said.

Members of a special police task force shot dead the kidnappers in a gunbattle before rescuing Salvacion Gamba Gorenflo, 39, from captivity in a house just south of Manila, said the statement.

Kidnappers seized Gorenflo on April 11 and demanded a ransom of one million dollars from her family in the United States, the police said.

Police rescued her after residents tipped them off about suspicious activities at the kidnappers’ lair.

The rescued woman was turned over to the US embassy, the police said, adding that a submachine-gun and two pistols were recovered from the kidnappers.

A US embassy spokeswoman said she could not immediately give any details.

Kidnappings for ransom occur frequently in the Philippines, an impoverished country in which police estimate more than three million guns are in circulation — an average of about one gun for every 30 Filipinos.
