CEBU CITY, PHILIPPINES – A businessman exchanged shots with a group of men who robbed his store in barangay Pooc, Talisay City, southern Cebu on Tuesday night.

Store owner Yul Julia Larrida said he was able to hit one of the six robbers, before the group fled on motorbikes after taking an undetermined amount of cash from Yul Julia General Merchandise in sitio Ranger.

Larrida, a member of a gun club in the city, was standing at the terrace of his house which is at least five meters from the store in a gated compound when he fired at one of the robbers.

Some family members were inside the house which sustained bullet holes.

Larrida told police at least six men on board two motorcycles arrived at his store about 6:30 p.m. They poked guns at two men guarding the gate and barged into the store to declare a holdup.

Several customers and store workers were ordered to drop to the ground.

One worker ran out through a backdoor and reported the holdup to Larrida.

Armed with a .45 caliber pistol, Larrida said he was at his house terrace when he saw one of the robbers walking in his direction.

Larrida said he fired at the robber, who also fired back.

The shootout lasted for at least five minutes, the businessman said.

Larrida said he was able to hit one of the robbers which prompted them to draw back before fleeing on two motorbikes.

The businessman said the robbers were armed with KG-9 and .45 caliber pistols.

Members of the Talisay police who arrived after the shootout recovered three empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol, two empty shells of a .9mm and a slug of .45 caliber pistol in the compound.

Police said the robbers took an undetermined amount of cash.

Supt. Henry Biñas, chief of the Talisay police, said investigators are already monitoring a group of robbers who could be behind the robbery.
