Policemen trying to serve an arrest warrant ended up shooting dead a man who shielded his friend from arrest in Talisay City.

The main target, Willie Savella, slipped away after the shootout.

Savella was wanted for murder. It was his third time to evade police arrest.

His friend, Rene Boy Ancajas, who stood up to protect the wanted man by standing in between the policemen and their target, died of gunshot wounds in the abdomen and head.

PO2 Crisostimo Bayato was also injured in the shootout in barangay Jaclopan, Talisay City, southern Cebu on Wednesday night.

He was injured in the right hand and right leg.

The arrest warrant for Savella stemmed from the killing of Warren Arias in barangay Buhisan, Cebu City on July 22, 2001.

Savella and Eddie Sabejon were tagged suspects in the crime.

PO2 Bayato and PO3 Rubin Perater went to sitio Campo Tres to serve the warrant after coordinating with Talisay police, said Senior Insp. Garciano, chief of the Theft and Robbery Section (TRS) and Anti-Street Hoodlum Operation Team (A-SHOT) of the Cebu City Police Office.

Garciano said the two policemen arrived in sitio Campo Tres and found Savella with a group of men in a drinking session.

When the policemen accosted the suspect, Ancajas reportedly grabbed his friend to shield him and fired a .38 revolver at the police.

Savella also pulled a .357 revolver and fired at the law enforcers.

“Nipatunga man si Ancajas og nagpagamit isip taming atol na sa engkwentro (Ancajas intervened and acted as a shield during the encounter),” said Garciano.

Savella managed to run away.

Police are checking reports that Savella was wounded when he escaped.

A .38 revolver and a .357 revolver were recovered at the scene.

Police said it was the third time that Savella evaded police arrest.
