TAGUM CITY, Philippines—A candidate for village councilor was shot dead by unidentified gunmen inside his home in Lingig town, Surigao del Sur on Sunday night, police said Monday.
Chief Superintendent Reynaldo Rafal, Caraga regional police chief, identified the victim as Eduardo Tacder, 48, married and a resident of Sitio (sub-village) Sayon, Barangay (village) Mahayahay.
In a text message to the INQUIRER, Rafal said the victim was inside his house when the assailants burst in at around 9 p.m. and shot him several times with a firearm of still unknown caliber.
Family members rushed Tacder to the Andres Soriano Memorial Hospital in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur for treatment but he died later.
Rafal said investigators are looking into several angles other than politics as possible motive in the killing.
