Supporters of a losing candidate are suspected of having exacted revenge by burning down the school where the voting took place, police said.

Five classrooms in the school in Pikit, Cotabato were burned to the ground Tuesday by armed men, thought to be supporters of a losing candidate in Monday’s local elections, said Senior Inspector Elias Dandan.

“These people are sore losers. They could not accept defeat, so they are causing trouble,” Dandan told reporters.

Police vowed to file arson charges against the unnamed suspects, who they say attacked the school before dawn Tuesday, shortly after election officials had proclaimed the winners.

Also Monday, a group of armed men believed to be supporters of a barangay candidate fired their weapons before burning two classrooms at the Mamaanun Primary School in Baloi, Lanao del Norte.

The balloting for officials in the country’s 42,000-plus villages and districts was disrupted in some places by violent incidents including attacks on candidates and campaigners.

At least 39 people were killed since the campaign began a month ago, said national police spokesman Senior Supt. Agrimero Cruz.

In Camarines Sur, three persons died when siblings of a barangay captain seeking reelection were ambushed by supporters of a rival bet Monday afternoon.

The brothers—Bienvenido and Tranquilino Malagad—died in the attack. Another relative, Jekyll Malagad, was seriously injured.

Miguel Daligdig was killed when the Malagads fought back.

Meanwhile, elections were finally held yesterday in 1,702 barangays in Bicol.

Col. Generoso Bolina, Southern Luzon Command spokesman, said the delayed casting of votes covered 43 towns. Bolina said of the 42 affected towns in Bicol, 20 towns were in Masbate, seven in Albay including Legazpi City, seven in Sorsogon and eight in Catanduanes.

Sen. Chiz Escudero, who hails from Sorsogon, was one of those who was not able to vote Monday due to the late arrival of election materials.
