MANILA, Philippines – Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels tortured and killed a Sangguniang Kabataan chairman in Pandan, Catanduanes on Monday, a military spokesman said.
Ninth Infantry Division spokesman Maj. Harold Cabunoc said the victim, Jay Carlo Cameleon, 20, was probably slain by the insurgents because he is suspected to be a military informant.
Cabunoc said the 2 assailants killed Cameleon around 5 p.m. at the village of San Isidro.
“Prior to the incident, two unidentified men were looking for Cameleon in his village. Finding the victim, he was dragged to a hilly portion in the area where he was tortured and shot to death with a caliber .45 pistol,” he quoted a police prober as saying.
Cabunoc said the killing of Cameleon brought to 35 the extra-judicial killings perpetrated by the insurgents in the Bicol region this year. The victims include 4 soldiers, a policeman and 8 government militiamen.
