KIDAPAWAN CITY — A school principal was gunned down by a still unidentified gunman while on his way home in Cotabato City, police said Thursday.

Police identified the victim as Abdulrahman Mero, principal of a public school on Bongo Island in Parang town in Maguindanao.

Reports from the Cotabato City police said Mero was driving his white Volkswagen with his wife and two kids on board when one of the gunmen, riding on a motorcycle, shot him three times on his head.

He was declared dead on arrival at the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center in Cotabato City.

Police hinted the killing could be election-related since Mero served as chairperson of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) on Bongo Island last Monday during the elections.

The mayoral contest in Parang town is hotly contested by incumbent Mayor Thalib Abo and Dr. Ibrahim Ibay, former board member of the Maguindanao Provincial Council.

Based on the latest tally from the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and KBP, Ibay is leading Abo only by a small margin. — Malu Cadelina Manar/RSJ/KBK, GMANews.TV
