MANILA, Philippines—In ten minutes, two armed robbers took off with some P750,000 cash, including a bundle of US dollars, from a money transfer shop in Manila.
The robbers easily completed the heist without hitches before noon Thursday because of a bomb threat at a fast-food restaurant near the US Embassy. They simply walked away with the loot.
Police Officer 3 Alonzo Layugan of the Manila Police District’s Ermita Station 5 told the Inquirer that the robbery happened at around 11:45 a.m. Thursday at the Western Union Money Transfer branch at the corner of UN Avenue and Mabini Street in Ermita.
Layugan said that before the incident, a man walked into the Western Union branch, posing as a client and inquiring about the cost of sending P1,000 to a certain province.
“While the man was asking the cashier, another man walked in and proceeded to the manager’s office, which is located in the innermost portion of the branch,” Layugan said.
