A SUSPECTED robber shot dead an old man he took  hostage to evade pursuing policemen in Quezon City Sunday night.

Insp. Benjamin Elenzano, deputy chief of the QCPD-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, identified the fatality as Herbin Cornista, 72, of 32 Road 4, Barangay Bagong Pag-Asa.

Suspect Robert Pingad, 40, a security guard, was wounded after exchanging fire with the members of the Special Weapons and Tactics unit.

As of press time, Pingad was being treated at the Quezon City General Hospital for multiple gunshot wounds. Police seized from him a caliber .45 caliber pistol he reportedly used in the robbery and in killing Cornista.

However, police failed to recover the P7,000 he took from Lydia’s bakery.

SPO2 Neil Garnace said Pingad poked a gun at bakery caretaker Rosemarie Bonifacio and demanded cash.

As the suspect was fleeing, Bonifacio shouted for help, catching the attention of PO2 Roberto Saborcos who chased and exchanged fire with Pingad.

The suspect barged into the house of Cornista whom he used as shield against the police. Pingad reportedly shot him in the chest and abdomen.

The suspect also grabbed Cornista’s daughter but she managed to free herself.

SWAT head Chief Insp. Reynante Parlade said that after 15 minutes of tension-filled drama, police neutralized the  suspect.
