A GOVERNMENT forest guard, who was a witness to an illegal logging case, was shot and killed by riding-in-tandem gunmen in a west coast village in Zamboanga City, according to a police on Saturday.

Police Station 9 commander Edilberto Alvarez identified the fatality as Haydee Valdivieso, a forest guard of the Zamboanga Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (Zamboecozone).

Chief Inspector Alvarez said that Valdivieso was aboard a “habal-habal” (motorbike) together with his companions when two men aboard on another motorcycle got abreast and shot dead the victim.

The victim and his companions were en route the Ecozone Highlands, where they are detailed, when the attack happened around 9:45 a.m. Friday along the highway in the village of Talisayan, Zamboanga City, Alvarez said.

The motive of the incident could be work-related since the victim was a witness in the apprehension of illegal logging by the Ecozone authorities, he said.

The victim was also the respondent of a complaint in demolition of a squatter area inside the property of Ecozone at the village of La Paz, in this city, he said.

An investigation is now underway by investigator of case to identity the suspects, he added
