Less than two weeks after an activist was shot dead in Aklan province, no less than his own relative was found dead in the province early Friday morning.

Aklan police chief Senior Superintendent Epifanio Bragais Jr. said the victim, initially identified as Zosimo Inginiero, 51, was a cousin of Fernando Baldomero.

Di pa namin ma-connect ang incident sa shooting ni Baldomero. Maaga para mai-connect until such time [na] makakuha tayo sapat na information (We still cannot connect the incident to the shooting of Baldomero, at least until we can get additional evidence),” Bragais said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Baldomero, a local official in Lezo town in Aklan, was gunned down July 5 as he was preparing to take his child to school. At the time of his killing, he was a provincial coordinator of the party-list group Bayan Muna. (See: Bayan Muna coordinator in Aklan shot dead

Last seen alive on Thursday

In the same radio interview, Bragais said initial information reaching him showed that Inginiero, a village watchman of San Ramon village in Malinao town, last seen alive Thursday night with two companions.

At the time, the victim reportedly told his friends to go ahead without him as he wanted to relieve himself. His body was found the next day in the village.

Siya ay nagpaalam iihi sa puno. Ngayon parang naiwanan siya. Ngayong umaga nalaman meron siyang tama (The victim said he would relieve himself at a tree, so he was left behind. The morning after, his body was found with gunshot wounds),” Bragais said.

He said they are gathering evidence from the crime scene and comparing them with those gathered from the scene of Baldomero’s killing to see if there is a connection.

A separate report on Visayas-based Bombo Radyo said police initially recovered an empty shell of a 9-mm pistol from the scene. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
