SANTIAGO, Agusan del Norte – Suspected Communist rebels killed a barangay elections candidate in front of his children inside his home in Santiago town, Agusan del Norte, Friday night.

Remel Moldez, running for the position of a barangay councilman, was shot several times inside his home past 9 p.m. Friday in Barangay San Isidro.

Senior Inspector Amadeo Meude Jr., chief of the Santiago Municipal Police Station, said more than 30 suspected New People’s Army rebels attacked Moldez’s home and took hostage his household helpers.

“Hinostage noong mga fully armed men ‘yong mga kasambahay niya at hinintay siyang makauwi,” Meude said.

He said Moldez’ children personally witnessed how the rebels killed their father.

Police said the motive could have something to do with the small-scale gold mining in Mount Sarog.

“Sa initial na investigation namin, maaring may connection itong pagpatay sa kanya doon sa operasyon ng illegal small scale mining sa Mt. Sarog,” Meude said.

He said they are also not discounting politics as the motive in the incident.
 
The police chief said that also on Friday, the same group of rebels went to the house of another barangay elections candidate identified as Angelito Garong.

He said Garong was not in his home and was able to detect the presence of the rebels. He said the candidate is now in hiding out of fear for his life. — Report from Richmond Hinayon, ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao
