ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte—Gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead a hard-hitting radio commentator here Thursday night.
Based on data from various media groups in the country, Fernando “Nanding” Solijon was the 202nd journalist killed in the Philippines since 1986.
Senior Police Office 1 Niel Ajos of the Nunucan police station said Solijon, anchorman of Love Radio FM’s “Sandiganan,” was in the coastal village of Buru-un when he was attacked by two men riding tandem on a motorbike around 10:30 p.m.
Ajos said Solijon was walking toward his car after having dinner and drinks with a friend when assailants approached and shot him repeatedly at close range.
“Solijon suffered from several gunshot wounds on the forehead, abdomen and shoulders,” Ajos said.
He said the broadcaster was rushed to a hospital but was dead on arrival.
Ajos said the police were investigating the killing of Solijon, who had reportedly been getting threats.
Solijon was the second broadcaster killed in the city since the 1983 killing of Charlie Aberilla, who was also a hard-hitting commentator.
International media groups have been egging the government to put a stop to attacks on journalists.
On June 24, unidentified men threw a grenade at dxGT radio station in Maramag, Bukidnon, injuring one person.
On August 1, photojournalist Mario Sy of the daily tabloid Sapol News in General Santos City was shot dead as he was resting inside his home.
Two days earlier, tabloid columnists Bonifacio Loreto and Richard Kho of the defunct Aksyon Ngayon were killed in Quezon City.
John Paul Jubelag, publisher of Sapol News, said Sy “was very vocal against the… illegal drugs trade in his village.”
