CAMP Olivas, Pampanga — The Central Luzon police are relentlessly conducting combat operations especially in remote and far-flung areas in the region to thwart any possible attacks by communist rebels during the 45th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) a week before the end of this year. Chief Supt. Raul D. Petrasanta, Police Regional Office 3 director, has ordered all police units in the region to intensify their intelligence and combat operations as the New People’s Army (NPA) might launch tactical offensive operation during the holding of CPP anniversary on Dec. 26. Petrasanta said the NPA, armed wing of CPP, used to launch tactical offensive attacks on government installations in marking their founding anniversary. The PNP had been strengthening its forces following the transfer of internal security functions from the Armed Forces to the police. In connection with this, Petrasanta directed the Regional Police Safety Battalion 3 (RPSB3) to enforce the clearing of insurgency-affected areas in Central Luzon. As a result of this operation, Supt. Nelson Aganon, PRO3 spokesperson, said members of Regional Police Safety Battalion 3 engaged at least nine communist terrorists in a gunbattle at 9 a.m. yesterday at the boundaries of Sitios Kawayan and Flora in Bgy. Marulo, Capas, Tarlac. Aganon said after a 15-minute gunbattle, the enemy retreated to the mountains, leaving behind a pack of subversive documents and military hardware, including a Claymore mine, electric wires, blasting caps and firing device. A sketchy police report said no casualties were reported from either side. Police are still scouring the area tracking the enemy.
