DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) — Unidentified gunmen shot and wounded an election officer in southern Philippines on Friday night, as the spate of violence continue three days before the country’s first automated elections on Monday.
The latest incident victimized Jay Salinas, the poll officer of Loreto town, in Mindanao’s Agusan del Sur province, Lt. Col. Michele Anayron, a military spokesperson in the region, said.
Anayron told Xinhua in a text message the incident happened at past 10:45 p.m. in Loreto’s Poblacion village as he arrived home from the town election office after a day’s work of overseeing the arrival of precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines from Manila.
“A gunman appeared and shot him with a cal. 45 pistol. He was hit in the side of his abdomen,” Anayron said, quoting an initial report from the police, adding the victim is undergoing treatment at a government hospital in the province.
Anayron said police are now investigating the incident.
The shooting happened only hours after leftist rebels harassed government soldiers guarding a polling center in Mati City, Davao Oriental, also in Mindanao.
A soldier was killed while two others were wounded in that incident.
