CAGAYAN DE ORO — A son of a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official in Lanao del Sur was abducted by seven unidentified men on Friday in Iligan City.
The kidnapping of Edris Polala, 21, son of Bayang, Lanao del Sur Comelec officer Disalongan Polala, is politically related, the police said.
Polala’s abductors demanded that his mother, Hadji Saripa Mangotara Polala, should step down as chairperson of Barangay Sumbag in Bayang, Lanao del Sur, and let the losing candidate to replace her.
Police Chief Inspector Regina Abanales, officer-in-charge of the Philippine National Police in Northern Mindanao Public Information Office, said accounts of eyewitnesses pointed Mrs. Polala’s rival in the last election as the suspect.
Abanales said the young Polala was on his way home from school when three unidentified men grabbed him while two others, who were carrying long firearms, posted as back-up.
Polala is studying at the Iligan Computer Institute (ICI) and is residing at Purok Gumamela, Barangay Mahayahay in Iligan City.
The men forcibly took Polala inside a green Mitsubishi Adventure without plate number and immediately fled towards Raymund Jeffrey Road also in Barangay Mahayahay, Abanales said.
She added that Polala was allowed by his abductors to call his brother Salahuddin at 8 p.m. on Friday.
Abanales said they have already created a Special Investigation Task Group to closely monitor the case and work for the possible rescue of the victim.
The filing of the case against Polala’s abductors was held in abeyance after his father sought assistance from different tribal leaders in Lanao del Sur for the safe release of his son.
Early this year, a notorious kidnap-for-ransom gang also abducted Noraldin Yusof, the son of Lanao del Sur Comelec Commissioner Elias Yusof.
One Kumander Tahib of the Pentagon Gang is reportedly behind Yusof’s abduction. (Nicole J. Managbanag of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
