KIDAPAWAN CITY — A 26-year old public school teacher was shot to death by motorcycle-riding attackers on the highway in Barangay Bagontapay, M’lang town, at 7:10 a.m., Thursday in North Cotabato.

Sr. Insp. Rolando Dillera, M’lang police deputy chief, identified the victim as Shernan Mark Duerme, 26, teacher at the M’lang National High School-Annex in Barangay Lepaga.

Dillera said the victim was on his Honda XR 200R when one of the suspects riding in tandem, using caliber-.45 pistol, pumped bullets into his chest.

Police are looking at personal grudge as possible motive in the attack.

Dillera also said the victim was a commandant of the school’s Citizens Army Training.

“From there, we will start to dig deeper into the killing,” he said.

But Shane Duerme, writer at the Philippine Information Agency-Region 12, said his elder brother Sherman has no known enemies at school and in the community in Barangay Bialong, M’lang.

Duerme’s killing is the third in North Cotabato since the election gun ban was enforced last Sunday, January 13.

On Tuesday, an employee of a recruitment agency identified as Allan Dumato was shot dead in Pikit town.

Dumato was on board his motorcycle when attacked by riders in tandem along the highway in Poblacion, Pikit.

He was declared dead upon arrival at the Kabacan Medical Specialist Hospital in nearby Kabacan town, according to Chief Inspector Jordine Maribojo, Pikit municipal police station chief.

Also on Tuesday, two escorts of a village chieftain in Banisilan town were killed in an ambush staged by alleged members of a lawless armed group supposedly led by a rebel commander.

Clan feud is believed most probable motive behind the ambush, police said.  — Malu Cadelina Manar /LBG, GMA News
