COTABATO CITY, A lone gunman shot dead Thursday afternoon a Maguindanao peace worker in what authorities believed was a case of family feud. The official was gun down last Thursday afternoon inside a coffee shop here.
Police identified the victim as certain Datu Rasid Ebrahim Regional Reconciliation and Unification Council (RRUC) officer of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and residents of Crossing Simuay, Sultan Kudarat.
Senior Supt. Willie Dangane said the alleged assailant, Castro Esmael, 26 of Barangay Rosary Heights 3, was arrested by responding policemen. A cal. 45 pistol and a magazine were taken from him.
Police investigators believed the suspect was a gun for hire and paid a huge amount of money to carry out the murder.
Ebrahim died on the spot having shot at the head.
Dangane said personal grudge could have motivated the suspect from killing the peace commissioner.
Ebrahim was in the forefront in preparing the ARMM Peace Summit scheduled on Monday here.
“We were surprised to learn a peace worker was shot dead because he is supposed to be a man of peace,” Lawyer Naguib Sinarimbo, ARMM executive secretary, said.
He said Ebrahim has been successful in settling long standing “rido” or family feud in Maguindanao before he was gunned down.
“Datu Ebrahim has been very active in pushing for peaceful settlement of all conflict in Maguindanao and we are sad he died violently,” Sinarimbo said.
