DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan, Philippines — A principal of a private school in Aguilar, Pangasinan, was stabbed and killed, while a school employee was wounded, on Monday, in what police said was an attempted robbery.

Police said Priscilla May Zaratan, 45, principal of the family-owned Zaratan Rural Institute Inc. in Barangay (village) Pogomboa, was sleeping in her quarters when a man barged into the school building at about 1 a.m.

Zaratan reportedly ran toward a bathroom but the man, who was armed with a knife, caught up with her and stabbed her in the neck.

An employee of the school, Juanito de la Cruz, 18, was awakened when the assailant tripped on him.

Police said De la Cruz tried to help Zaratan but the attacker stabbed and wounded him.

Zaratan died while being taken to the Mangatarem District Hospital in Mangatarem town.
