DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) – A media worker was killed in Misamis Occidental province yesterday, the latest violent incident authorities believe to be related to the upcoming elections, police said.
Edwin Segue, a freelance radio reporter for several radio stations in Ozamis City, Misamis Occidental, was attacked by two motorcycle-riding gunmen shortly after 4:00 p.m. when he drove his vehicle along Don Anselmo Bernard Avenue in downtown Ozamis, Ramon Diones, city police chief, said.
The victim’s wife, Bebie, said that days before he was gunned down, several people have approached her husband asking him to withdraw his support from a particular vice gubernatorial candidate.
Diones said they are also investigating whether it was a work- related killing as the victim was also a councilor in the city’s San Antonio village.
Elsewhere, harassment against media workers continued.
In Tagum City, Davao del Norte, a newspaper publisher reported to have received death threats from unidentified persons.
Josephine Revilla, publisher of a local language newspaper, said she had received a text message telling her she would be dead before her next birthday. Her newspaper has tackled controversial issues lately.
The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines has urged authorities to solve attacks and killings of media workers in the country.
More than a hundred journalists were murdered in the Philippines over the past two decades and more, making the country one of the most dangerous places for media in the world.
On Nov. 23, 2009, 32 journalists were killed when 100 gunmen loyal to a political clan in Maguindanao province seized and summarily executed 57 civilians, journalists and supporters of a gubernatorial candidate there.
