Nun shot, loses P95 K in robbery
MANILA, Philippines—An Indian nun was shot and seriously wounded by motorcycle-riding thieves who robbed her of P95,000 she had just withdrawn from a bank in Manila, police said Wednesday.
Theresa Thomas Folanchery, a member of the Sisters of Charity of St. Anne, remained under observation at a hospital a day after the robbery, which took place in front of the order’s convent on Tejeron Street in Manila’s Sta. Ana district around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, police said.
Police Officer 3 Reginald de los Reyes of the Manila Police District’s General Assignment Section said a certain Sister Rolita Nuevaespaña, a colleague of the victim, reported the robbery to the police only at around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
(Hospitals are required by law to immediately report shooting and stabbing injuries to the police.)
The victim had just withdrawn some P95,000 from the Bank of the Philippine Islands branch on Tejeron and was about to alight from a tricycle when one of the assailants snatched the bag containing the money.
A scuffle ensued and then the robber pulled out a gun and shot the victim before fleeing with the loot, De los Reyes said.
