THE District Anti-Illegal Drugs (DAID) of the Manila Police District (MPD) is in hot water amid accusations of extortion and torture from a farmer whom some of its members arrested last November 14, 2013 at a fast-food restaurant in Ermita, Manila.
MPD insiders said the farmer, identified as Tranquilino Lapuente, a native of Isabela, Ilocos, wasarrested at the Chowking restaurant last November 14 by men who introduced themselves as members of the MPD-DAID and supposedly in connection with a case involving illegal drugs. The victim reportedly denied having anything to do with illegal drugs, claiming that he was detained just the same. He also alleged that an operative has demanded an initial amount of P5 million which was reduced to P200,000 after much haggling and when he agreed to give his lot title as ‘collateral.’
After being subjected to inquest proceedings and released for further investigation, the victim said he had difficulty getting his title back, that he decided to seek help from media members covering the MPD.
As of this writing, higher authorities are reportedly looking into the complaint for proper action.
