TWO unidentified men on board a motorcycle yesterday shot a Manila policeman in the face pointblank, while the latter was standing near the corner of Tambakan and Ongpin Streets in Sta. Cruz, Manila. SPO4 Antonio Castillo, assigned at the Manila Police District-Police Station 11, died on the spot while the unidentified suspects were able to flee after the incident. Manila Police District-Homicide Section chief Police Inspector Steve Casimiro said Castillo, 53, a resident of Tondo, Manila, was on duty when the incident took place at around 9 a.m. Castillo was reportedly standing at the said street corner when the two motorcycle-riding men arrived and shot him at close range without a warning. He sustained gunshot wounds in the body. In the course of the shooting, a female vendor then tending her wares near the area was accidentally hit by a stray bullet. It was learned that Antonio was assigned at the anti-illegal drugs section of MPD-Station 11 and already nearing retirement. Homicide probers raised the possibility that Castillo may have crossed some drug syndicates in the course of discharging his duties. Only recently, he reportedly caused the arrest and incarceration of a Chinese druglord. An investigation is underway to establish the killers’ identities.
