A 12-YEAR-OLD boy has been declared in critical condition after he was hit with a hammer by his allegedly mentally ill mother in Barangay Nangka, Boljoon, Cebu on Friday.
The boy (name withheld) was sleeping inside the house past noon when his mother suddenly struck him with the hammer.
SPO2 Cristina Pantojan of the Boljoon Police Station’s Women and Children’s Protection Desk (WCPD) said the boy suffered severe head injuries.
He was first taken to the Saint Peter Hospital in Alegria town, but was later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City.
His mother, on the other hand, was brought to the VSMMC psychiatric ward.
Pantojan said the victim’s father was in Malabuyoc town for an errand when the incident happened.
The boy reportedly tried to run away but his mother caught up with him.
Some neighbors saw the child with blood on his face and brought him to the hospital.
Pantojan said the family was supposed to bring the mother to VSMMC last Saturday after she was noticed to have been acting strangely.
She was reportedly diagnosed with mental disorder since she was young.
She was admitted in VSMMC in 1983. She was released after getting her treatment.
For many years, Pantojan said, the woman has been in her normal state until the last Friday’s incident.
Pantojan believes it could have been triggered by the family’s financial difficulty.
The boy is still a grade one pupil because his family had no money to support his studies.
Considering the medical history of the mother, Pantojan said there will be no charges to be filed against her.
The police will refer the matter to the Department of Social Welfare and Development 7.
