CEBU CITY – Masbate Councilor Leny Betonio Eser and her companion Crisanta Lauro were shot by two unidentified suspects on Monday in this city.

Eser is a councilor of Pio V. Corpuz in Masbate, and Lauro was said to be the live-in partner of Masbate Mayor Hermigildo Betonio III, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) said.

Lauro died of gunshot wounds to the head and chest. Eser was hit in her left hand.

Police investigation showed the victims, who came from Masbate, were riding a taxi when two unidentified men shot them at corner V. Sotto St. and Sergio Osmeña Blvd. in Tinago, Cebu City, around 5 a.m. Monday.

The suspects on board a motorcycle fired at them several times.

“I was disturbed by the successive fires at my back, unknowingly we were already being shot,” said cab driver Gilbert Bernito.

Bernito sought medical treatment for his passengers at Chong Hua Hospital, but Lauro was declared dead on arrival.

Police Officer 3 Geoffrey Gutual said political rivalry could be the motive of the shooting.
