A MAN allegedly suffering from depression was arrested after he stabbed dead his live-in partner during a heated argument at a relative’s house in Marikina City on Thursday afternoon. Police said the suspect, Elpidio Mabahin, 42, grabbed a bread knife and threatened to kill his partner, Ellinda Alquino, 43. Neighbors tried to pacify Mabahin but called the police for help when they saw him holding the knife. Policemen, including members of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, arrived at the scene and tried to persuade Mabahin to give up. But the suspect refused and held Alquino hostage for about an hour. Senior Superintendent Romeo Magsalos, Marikina police chief, even went to the scene to pacify the hostage taker who at the time locked himself with his partner inside a toilet. “I was trying to persuade him to go out and talk things out. But sensing he was already acting strange, I sought the clearance of the Eastern Police District head to strike,” Magsalos said. A fire truck and two ambulances were deployed as policemen barged into the house. But before policemen could arrest him, Mabahin had stabbed Alquino 24 times in the neck and body. Alquino was rushed to Amang Rodriguez Medical Center but was pronounced dead by the attending physician at 4:30 p.m. Mabahin, temporarily detained at the police station, will be charged with murder in the Marikina Prosecutor’s Office. Magsalos said they learned that Mabahin was depressed when he learned that his 16-year-old daughter was raped allegedly by a relative of his live-in partner. “It was aggravated when his daughter refused to see him,” the police official said.—Niña Calleja
