COTABATO CITY, Philippines—Kidnappers struck again on Sunday, killing one and snatching two traders in separate areas, hours after Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao defeated Mexican Antonio Margarito.

As in Pacquiao’s previous fights, crime incidents in the country were reduced to almost zero on Sunday when the famed boxer turned congressman battled it out in the ring with Antonio Margarito in Arlington, Texas in the US.

But hours after the fight, kidnappers seized Rodolfo Chio, a 70-year-old gasoline dealer in Datu Piang, Maguindanao, at about 5 p.m.

Brig. Gen. Ariel Bernardo, deputy commander of the 6th Infantry Division, said Chio was taken by about four gunmen and forced into a waiting black sedan, which sped toward Barangay (village) Datu Gumbay.

A clash between the kidnappers and militiamen ensued in Barangay Balakaken, wounding a seven-month pregnant woman. She was taken to a hospital in Cotabato City for treatment.

No one has claimed responsibility and no ransom demand has been made as of yet.

In Sto. Niño, South Cotabato, kidnappers also seized a woman trader and shot her husband during the scuffle Sunday evening.

Grace Eleuterio, 39, operator of Denmark Transport Cooperative, was taken by the unidentified assailants who fled toward Allah River.

Police said Eleuterio’s staff, Joan Pantaleon, was killed.

The victims were at the public market of Sto. Niño when the kidnappers on board another van parked and declared a kidnapping.

Eleuterio’s husband resisted and he was shot and Pantaleon was hit by stray bullets.

An hour later, the KIA van used as getaway vehicle was found abandoned in Barangay New Panay.

Sto. Niño police believed that Eleuterio was transferred to another vehicle.
