A man was killed while three others were injured by stray bullets during the celebration of Eud’l Fitr or the end of fasting month at dawn yesterday in Cotabato City.
Killed after being hit in the head by a slug of cal. 45 pistol from nowhere was Boyet Potenciano, an appliance repairman and a resident of Barangay Salimbao, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.
Neighbors said Potenciano was sitting outside his home at about 6 a.m. when a stray bullet of cal. 45 pistol landed on his head.
He was rushed to the Cotabato Emergency hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
A 9-year-old boy from Barangay Poblacion 7, Cotabato City, was hit by wayward bullet on his left ankle and is being treated at a government hospital.
Two others from Maguindanao were also rushed to the hospital due to bullet wounds.
Despite repeated appeals of Muslim religious leaders, gun owners in Cotabato City and its environs fired their guns to welcome the end of the fasting month of Ramadhan.
Three houses in Barangay Rosary Heights were also hit by stray bullets but nobody in the households were hurt.
Sr. Supt. Willie Dangane, city police director, admitted there were gunfires as the city welcomed the end of fasting month but assured not among them were members of the city police.
Before the celebration, Dangane said preventive measures were instituted by the city police office to prevent policemen from firing their guns during the revelry. After the celebration, an accounting of bullets assigned to each police officer will be conducted, Dangane said.
For a month, Ustadz Jaafar Ali of the National Ulama Council of the Philippines, had been calling on gun owners in Cotabato City not to fire their guns in welcoming Eud’l Fitr “because it destroys the image of Islam.”
He said firing of guns could result to injuries to other revelers.
“Instead of buying bullets to be fired on Eud’l Fitr, Muslims should buy food and share them to the poor,” Ustadz Ali said.
His appeal fell on deaf ears.
