MANILA, Philippines – A gunman killed a woman on Saturday night in Manila but failed to kill his other target—the victim’s live-in partner. Manila Police District (MPD) homicide investigators said the gunman had carefully planned the attack on Jocelyn Roa, 40, and her partner, Nanjimin Bantrang, even slashing the tires of the couple’s motorcycle to make sure they would not be able to escape. Roa was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors at the Mary Chiles Hospital from shotgun pellet wounds in the back while Bantrang escaped without any injuries. The shooting incident took place at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday in front of the Blue Building at the corner of Gunao and Arlegui Streets in Quiapo. Case investigator Senior Police Officer 4 Virgilio Martinez said the couple had just left their unit at the building on their way to the parking lot when they saw that all the tires of their motorcycle were flat. They were about to go back into the building when a man armed with a sumpak (improvised shotgun) appeared and shot Roa at close range. Bantrang told the police that he managed to escape unscathed when he ran for cover behind another vehicle as the man trained the gun on him.
