Some 30 Mamanwa tribe members allegedly set fire to a mining firm’s heavy equipment worth around P32 million.
Radio dzXL on Friday cited police reports saying the alleged raiders set fire to the heavy equipment of Taganito Mining Corporation in Urbiztondo Village, Surigao del Norte around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Two dump trucks, two backhoes, a bulldozer, and a road compactor were burned in the incident.
The alleged raiders also abducted the mining firm’s security guards, Adriano Mondejar and Marico Ruadel, but eventually released them.
The police claimed that some members of the Mamanwa, a local indigenous group, allegedly demanded a one-percent royalty tax from the firm’s profits. –VVP, GMANews.TV
