LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Philippines—A Lucena police intelligence operative was shot by a still unidentified assailant inside a videoke house here early Sunday and is now fighting for his life in a hospital, according to the police.

Superintendent Alex Orfanel, Lucena police chief, identified the victim as Police Officer 3 Richard Amar, assigned with the Lucena police intelligence unit and owner of the R-Haws videoke bar located on Claro M. Recto Street in Barangay (village) 4.

Orfanel said Amar was talking with a videoke bar worker at around 12:20 a.m. Sunday when the gunman armed with a still unidentified weapon sneaked from behind and shot the lawman in the right side of his nape.

Police said the gunman and another companion immediately escaped after the shooting.

Amar was rushed by videoke bar workers to a local hospital and is now confined in its intensive care unit.

Police said they were still establishing the motive for the shooting.

Last Tuesday, former Senior Inspector Ireneo Valero, a retired official of the Quezon Police Maritime Group, was shot dead in an ambush staged by motorcycle riders near his house in the coastal village of Dalahican here.

Orfanel said they did not have any suspects in Valero’s killing, as of Sunday.

He said the Lucena police have formed a special task force to immediately solve the case.
