DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Xinhua) – Leftist rebels attacked a school to be used as a polling station in southern Philippines today, leaving a soldier dead and two others wounded, the military said.
The attack happened at 10:45 a.m. in Taguibo village, Mati City in Mindanao’s Davao Oriental province, according to Col. Romeo Calizo, an army brigade commander in the area.
“Three soldiers were wounded in the incident but one of them expired while being treated at the nearest hospital,” Calizo told Xinhua by phone.
The military official said New People’s Army rebels launched the assault while the soldiers were busy preparing a checkpoint to screen voters in Monday’s elections.
It was the latest spate of violence to hit Mindanao days ahead of the elections, as some 50 million Filipinos will come to polling stations across the country to vote for a new president and legislators.
The 5,000-strong NPA has been fighting a 40-year insurgency in 60 of the country’s 80 provinces.
