MANILA, Philippines – A lawyer of a witness in the Maguindanao massacre was wounded in an ambush at the compound of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) regional office in Cotabato City yesterday morning.
Richard Petisme, lawyer of witness Rasul Sanki, suffered a gunshot wound in his neck but was declared in stable condition, according to Nena Santos, legal counsel of Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu.
“Attorney Petisme came from the ARMM office when the ambush took place, he managed to duck that’s why he was only hit once,” Santos said in a telephone interview.
She surmised that the ambush was meant to warn the families of the victims and the witnesses of the Nov. 23 massacre.
Cotabato City Police director Senior Superintendent Willy Dangane was not able to provide information about the ambush, and could only say that he has ordered an investigation.
Mangudadatu, meanwhile, said that all the 134 persons with pending warrants of arrest for multiple murder charges in connection with the massacre should be put behind bars and made to stand trial.
A total of 196 people were charged in connection with the multiple murder, including 13 members of the Ampatuan clan, among them the clan patriarch Andal Sr. and his sons suspended ARMM Gov. Zaldy and Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Jr., who allegedly led the brutal murders.
