MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) A Philippine Navy junior officer was found dead inside the barracks in the Armed Forces of the Philippines headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo Monday evening, a military spokesman said.

Lieutenant Senior Grade Marvin Mariano was found dead with a gun shot wound to his head inside his room in the bachelor’s officer’s quarters inside Camp Aguinaldo at around 8:45 p.m. Monday evening, AFP spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Arnulfo Burgos said in a press briefing Tuesday.

Initial investigations indicate Mariano died early Monday but it was only discovered in the evening, Burgos said.

Major Enrico Ileto Deputy chief for Public Affairs, in the same briefing, said that Mariano had been missing from his work Monday afternoon, prompting his co-workers from the Communication Electronic and Information System Service of the AFP to look for him in his quarters.

An investigation was made by the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) and the AFPs Military Police Battalion, Burgos said.

Asked if there was foul play in the Navy officer’s death, Burgos said: “We still don’t know yet. The SOCO (scene of the crime operatives) was still investigating his death.”

According to Burgos, the victim was assigned at the Navy’s communications office.

But an Inquirer source, who requested anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media, said the victim was attending training at the “Special Intelligence Training School” in Camp Aguinaldo. With Marlon Ramos, Philippine Daily Inquirer
