General Santos-based broadcaster and columnist Chito Abuzo was bludgeoned death inside the compound of DXGS radio station in the city late Saturday, according to Inquirer.net.
City police chief Marcelo Pintac said Abuzo, a known critic of local politicians, was beaten to death with a rock. Police said the killing was likely motivated by a personal grudge, adding that they were hunting for a suspect, a report posted. Abuzo also writes a column for local newspaper Sapol.
According to Sky News, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said 32 journalists were killed in the Philippines last year, making it the world’s deadliest country for journalists for 2009.
Since 2006, at least 134 journalists have been murdered since the fall of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, with 97 of the deaths occurring since 2001 under President Gloria Arroyo’s administration.
In November 23 last year, more than 30 journalists were among 57 people murdered in the Maguindanao massacre.
